Miles of Motivation: Insights From the 2024 Standard Chartered Marathon

Running my first Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon (SCNM) on 27th October 2024,  was an exhilarating experience! As I pounded the pavement, a flurry of questions danced through my mind. Beyond the glory and medals for the winners, I wondered what informs such events, and what treasures awaited the rest of us brave souls. Why do so many individuals and institutions pour their heart, time, and resources into this spirited race?

After finishing the race and proudly receiving my hard-earned 5KM marathon medal, I put my thinking cap on. I went around the main venue, visited exhibition areas, and interacted with fellow participants. And it was at this point that I got the recollection of the significance of marathons such as the  21st edition of the SCNM. An international event that attracted about 23,000 participants including persons with disabilities.

Every year, individuals and organizations alike find compelling reasons to participate in this highly anticipated event.

Firstly, marathons promote a healthy lifestyle and boost physical fitness. Participants can burn calories and enhance their cardiovascular health by walking in various categories, including 5 km, 10 km, 21 km, or 42 km. All of these activities contribute to increased muscle tone and improved respiratory endurance. A healthy lifestyle.

Seasoned matadors are familiar with Aaron Douglas Trimble saying: “It is difficult to train for a marathon, but it is even more difficult to not be able to train for a marathon.” Consider the goals you set and the rigorous training you undertake to compete in such a race. This process fosters discipline and determination in you, which in turn enhances your mental well-being, boosts your self-esteem, and builds mental resilience.

Secondly, during the race, I could see the KICTANet team cheering each other in person and through live online feeds. Family members who came raced in unison, making it a true family affair. These atmospheres foster camaraderie and strengthen their bonds. It creates shared experiences and lasting memories, and the thrill of accomplishment adds to the overall joy of the event. True hedonism.

I would not forget to mention the marketing and brand awareness opportunities that such events present to sponsors. By publicly acknowledging and showcasing the sponsors of the marathon, their brand visibility increases, along with the positive associations linked to their involvement. This strengthens existing client relations and provides a platform to create new ones. Furthermore, this aligns well with corporate social responsibility goals. A CSR opportunity.

Additionally, after the race,  I witnessed team members from various industries and organisations connect with professionals from other companies, an opportunity that can lead to collaborations. This is also an excellent moment to learn about and share on different organisational products and services.

For instance, as the KICTANet team, we had the opportunity to visit the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK)  desk, where we learned about ADAK’s mandate and its approach to monitoring and preventing doping among Kenyan athletes. I recall the lighthearted discussions we had on the delicate act of effectively prohibiting doping and unfair competition, while still supporting efforts against gender discrimination.

In conclusion, marathons have consistently benefited society over time. They have created opportunities to raise funds for various charitable causes, stimulated local economies, and contributed to the development of communities. Many athletes have discovered and honed their talents through marathons, while the achievements of experienced marathon runners have inspired newcomers to chase their dreams. No man is limited.
