Theme: “Building a Stronger Local Network for Digital Rights and Safety.”
Introduction
KICTANet, in recognition of the need to establish a robust local network of digital safety and rights advocates among Kenyan Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Community Based Organisations (CBOs), and in response to an earlier call for local CBOs working on digital rights and safety to apply to join this network, is hosting an introductory webinar.
The webinar theme is informed by insights from a recent needs assessment report, which will be presented during the event. The webinar will also serve as the network’s official launch, bringing together key stakeholders to explore the importance of collective action, discuss the benefits of a coordinated network, and explore optimal approaches for establishing a sustainable and impactful network.
The network aims to convene organisations focused on championing digital human rights and safety, advocating for policies that protect online freedoms, and ensuring that the digital space remains inclusive and secure for all. It will serve in catalysing human-centred and rights-based policy reviews and development, ensuring that new and existing policies reflect the realities and needs of Kenyan citizens in the digital age. Furthermore, the network will play a key role in fostering the creation of innovative, rights-based digital solutions that empower communities and promote safe online practices.
Background
The digital space in Kenya presents both immense opportunities and significant challenges for civil society organisations (CSOs). As the digital landscape evolves, safeguarding digital rights and promoting online safety have become paramount. To effectively address these critical issues, fostering a robust and collaborative network among local CSOs is essential. This webinar, therefore, marks the introduction and official kick-off for the Local CSOs Network.
This inaugural call will lay the foundation for a unified approach by exploring what truly matters in our collective work as a team within the Kenyan context. We will delve into the unique expertise, knowledge, skills, networks, and resources that each organisation brings to this collaborative endeavor. Furthermore, we will align our individual organisational interests and priorities with the shared objectives of KenSafeSpace in Kenya, charting a clear path for effective joint action and impactful outcomes in advancing digital rights and safety across the nation.
