Shedding Light on the Unseen Impact of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence.

By Neema Mujesia,

Today, KICTANet, in partnership with the British High Commission through the Digital Accessibility Program (DAP), embarked on a groundbreaking initiative—recording a documentary on the impact of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) on the mental health of survivors.

TFGBV is a growing crisis in Kenya, affecting individuals across diverse socio-economic backgrounds. This form of violence includes online harassment, cyberbullying, sextortion, and the non-consensual sharing of intimate images. While the immediate effects of these violations are often visible, the mental health consequences remain largely unspoken—manifesting as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-harm, negative sleep patterns, and even suicidal ideation.

Through this documentary, survivors bravely share their stories, exposing the profound psychological impacts of TFGBV. Their narratives aim to humanize the issue, spark conversations, and push for enhanced legal and mental health interventions.

Why This Documentary Matters

1.Raising Awareness: By showcasing authentic survivor stories, we hope to ignite a much-needed cultural shift in digital interactions and create a more empathetic online environment.

2. Advocating for Policy Change: The documentary aims to highlight the urgent need for accessible and effective mental health services tailored to TFGBV survivors.

3. Shaping Public Discourse: Increased recognition of the mental health toll of TFGBV will push for stronger frameworks and policies to support victims and survivors.

What to Expect

KICTANet is set to produce a powerful 10-minute documentary that brings to light the personal experiences of TFGBV survivors. This film is not just about storytelling—it is a call to action for policymakers, mental health practitioners, digital rights advocates, and every internet user to take a stand against digital gender-based violence.
